TANDEM BIKE RENTAL REVIEW>>>(Edited for clarity and down to one star instead of two: though they sound accommodating; there's something untrustworthy here--why did they feel a need to make fun of me? I doubt they take improving the experience seriously if they don't take me seriously.)
When we arrived we had to wait for a very long time because they don't have enough tandem bikes for how many people are using them. We weren't warned that there would be no padding provided (and trust me you're going to need them). They provided a map of places without warning that some of them aren't tandem bike friendly. These aren't off-road bikes, and they will distract drivers on the main road. This isn't a great way to work closely with someone, there's nothing romantic about this (now if it were a banana seat where you could share the seat...maybe). How it works is the person in front has control and all the responsiblity to warn the person in back about bumps and turns and sudden stops, and the person in the back just has to deal with it and doesn't really contribute to the ride (perhaps they just reduce pedalling power?). Whoever is in the back is going to need to be fine with all the mistakes the person in the front makes. Maybe some people find that romantic, but I couldn't wait to be done. Since I didn't have padding and we were right next to the river and needing to deal with a broken sidewalk, I was very injured during and after the ride.
Mostly, I like Outdoors Unlimited. They have a policy of returning items by 5:00 and if you are late, they charge you another day's rental. I had 3 mountain bikes to return and I got there at 5:10 pm. They were going to charge me an additional $180. That is infuriating. "Company policy" is what they quoted me. They did knock down the ridiculous late fee down by half. But, I do not think I will rent from here again because of that. I'm ok with a late fee but put a cap on it or be a little understanding. The employees are nice but not very bendable. Make no mistake: I understand that I was 10 minutes late. But that kind of late fee does not fit the crime. Even by half.
They will charge you an extra day of rental cost just because you returned it during the last hour of the day they are open (between 5 and 6). Nobody told me this policy when I rented. This penalizes customers who can’t return it till after they are off work at 5. The only reason I see for this kind of policy is to milk more out of unsuspecting customers after it’s too late.
I hate writing reviews, but I was so disappointed by the service. I took my bike in for a pro bike tune (second most exhaustive tune for $80). I was told my bike would be ready within 5 days or less. Seven days later I called, and they hadn't even started on it. One hour later, I get a call that my bike was ready... The bike was in the exact same state as when I dropped it off. The pro bike tune includes a "thorough" bike wash and drivetrain cleaning. Nothing had been cleaned (frame, drivetrain, chain, etc.). I dunno about you, but you normally clean parts before tuning them. The brakes still squeaked which I requested they look at, and I suspect there was no "tune" done to the bike.
I took my bike back to ask for refund the following day. They offered to refund 50% and clean the bike by the end of the day. The bike was a little better, but the frame, the chain, derailer, and the drivetrain were still dirty. The brakes were still squeaky, but I wasn't told anything so I could address it. :( Aside from Gavin, the staff were poorly equipped to answer any questions.
I’d give 6 stars if I could. Luke and Drew were both studs today. Super grateful for how Drew got my bike done so fast so that I could have it in time for a race and for how well he cleaned it. Stellar job!
Have to give a one star today. It has nothing to do with the employees or the equipment. I wish you offered half-day rentals. I wanted to rent two e-bikes from 4-6pm, but I would have to pay for the full day, even though I would only have them for two hours. I think we can agree that $40/bike for two hours is simply unreasonable. I hope this policy changes soon and half-day or hourly rentals will be available for the equipment! I’m looking forward to it :)
Only giving 3 stars cause I am genuinely appreciative of them fixing my paddleboard. However, I was told to come get my board in the morning, it is the afternoon, and my paddleboard was still blown up with all the pieces on the ground. I went and paid, thinking that’s what they were waiting for. I get back to my board and stand there like, are you going to help me!? And no one helps me, they all stand there and just chat and stare. I hope the show was good for you boys! Seriously BYU! Do better, be better! Set the example! Absolutely disgusted that 5 boys sat and stared while a customer did their job!
